Cyber Monday: Big Deals… and Even Bigger Scams
Stay safe while you shop online this Cyber Monday
Cyber Monday is one of the biggest online shopping days of the year — a chance to grab amazing deals from the comfort of your home. But while you’re hunting for bargains, scammers are hunting for victims.
At Carrick-on-Suir Credit Union, we want to help you shop smart, stay secure, and protect your hard-earned money. Here are our top tips for avoiding online scams this Cyber Monday (and all year round).
1. Spot Fake Websites
Fraudsters often create fake shopping sites that look just like real ones.
Here’s how to check before you click “buy”:
- Look for “https://” in the web address — the “s” stands for secure.
- Double-check the spelling of the website name. A small typo can signal a fake.
- Be cautious of unfamiliar retailers offering huge discounts or asking for unusual payment methods.
If you’re unsure, search the store’s name along with “reviews” or “scam” before making a purchase.
2. Avoid “Too Good to Be True” Deals
If an offer looks unbelievable — it probably is.
Scammers use limited-time “flash deals” or luxury items at low prices to lure you into sharing your card details or downloading malware. Always compare prices across a few trusted retailers before buying.
3. Protect Your Personal and Financial Information
Your bank and your Credit Union will never ask for your PIN, full card number, or online banking passwords via email, text, or phone.
- Don’t share personal information on unsecured sites.
- Avoid clicking links from unsolicited emails or social media ads.
- Use secure, traceable payment methods like debit or credit cards — never wire transfers or gift cards.
4. Shop Using Secure Connections
Avoid making purchases on public Wi-Fi networks, as scammers can intercept your details.
Instead, use your home connection or mobile data, and make sure your device’s antivirus software is up to date.
5. Keep an Eye on Your Accounts
Regularly check your account activity for unusual or unfamiliar transactions — especially after a big shopping weekend.
If you notice anything suspicious, contact your Credit Union or card provider immediately.
Your Security Matters to Us
At Carrick-on-Suir Credit Union, your safety — both online and offline — is our priority.
This Cyber Monday, take an extra moment before you click “buy now.” A few simple checks can save you from stress, loss, and fraud.
Stay smart. Shop safe.
