Protect Yourself from Fraud This Holiday Season

The holiday season is a time for shopping, celebrations, and spending time with loved ones. Unfortunately, it is also one of the busiest times of year for fraudsters. As online shopping and digital banking activity increase, criminals take advantage of the festive rush to target unsuspecting consumers.

At Carrick-on-Suir Credit Union, we want to help our members stay safe and protect their hard-earned money. Here are some common scams to watch out for this holiday season and practical steps you can take to stay secure.

1. Beware of Phishing Scams

Fraudsters often send emails, text messages, or social media messages pretending to be from trusted organisations such as banks, delivery companies, online retailers, or even your credit union.

Warning signs include:

  • Requests for personal or financial information
  • Urgent messages claiming there is a problem with your account
  • Suspicious links or attachments
  • Poor spelling and grammar

Stay safe by:

  • Never clicking links in unexpected messages
  • Contacting the organisation directly using official contact details
  • Never sharing your PIN, passwords, verification codes, or online banking credentials

2. Be Cautious with Online Shopping

Scammers create fake websites and social media advertisements offering incredible deals that can be difficult to resist.

Before making a purchase:

  • Shop only with trusted retailers
  • Check website reviews before purchasing
  • Ensure the website address begins with "https://"
  • Be wary of prices that seem too good to be true

Remember, if a deal looks unbelievable, it probably is.

3. Watch Out for Delivery Scams

During the holiday season, many people expect parcels. Fraudsters exploit this by sending fake delivery notifications claiming there is an issue with your package or a small fee needs to be paid.

Protect yourself by:

  • Tracking parcels through the retailer or courier's official website
  • Avoiding links sent in unsolicited texts or emails
  • Never entering card details to pay unexpected delivery fees

4. Keep Your Debit Card Secure

Whether shopping online or in-store, it's important to safeguard your card details.

Helpful tips:

  • Never share your card PIN
  • Shield the keypad when entering your PIN
  • Review your account regularly for unusual transactions
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately

5. Be Alert to Social Media Scams

Fraudsters often use social media platforms to run fake competitions, sell non-existent products, or impersonate trusted businesses.

Remember:

  • Verify accounts before engaging
  • Avoid sending payments through unsecure methods
  • Be cautious of requests for personal information

6. Strengthen Your Online Security

One of the best ways to protect yourself is to make your online accounts more secure.

Consider:

  • Using strong, unique passwords for every account
  • Enabling two-factor authentication where available
  • Keeping your phone, computer, and apps updated
  • Installing reputable antivirus software

If Something Doesn't Feel Right, Stop and Think

Fraudsters rely on panic, excitement, and urgency to catch people off guard. If you receive a message, phone call, or email that doesn't seem right, take a moment to pause before acting.

If you believe you've been the victim of fraud or notice suspicious activity on your account, contact Carrick-on-Suir Credit Union immediately. Reporting concerns quickly can help minimise potential losses and protect your finances.

This holiday season, stay alert, stay informed, and help us keep our community safe from fraud!
